Special Dogs

Every dog we have owned as been special, each with their own unique personalities. Here are a few of which we are particularly proud. The section of course starts off with our "Top Twenty" dogs, but each share a special place in Lake Kennels history. Enjoy!

spruce meadowsBISS Ch. Lake Jerdan's First Edition "Buddha"

With a disproportionately large tummy and a voracious appetite at birth, the call name for the new addition to our Dane family, "Buddha", seemed quite natural. Buddha is a second-generation Top 20 contender. His mother, Ch. Jerdan's Sweet sensation, competed in the 1922 GDCA Top 20 Invitational. At seven months, in his third show, Buddha went Winners Dog and Best Opposite over specials. He completed his championship on his 16 month birthday. With excellence in type, size, soundness and movement, Buddha is a multiple group winner. He is a breeder's and owner-handler's dream come true. On Buddha's behalf, many thanks are extended to all of the judges, supporters and friends that keep adding to that dream.

Excerpts from the Top 20 Catalog

On the ride home from Jerdan's Kennels on March 11th, 1989, Mari stated that the cute, shy six-week old fawn bitch with the pretty eyes would be hers some day. Although prophetic, her statement didn't seem possible as the Sweet Sensation, Shannon, had been promised to another. Over the next sixteen months, Shannon's fate looked uncertain. Her owner died very unexpectedly and she was part of an estate litigation (apparently being treated very unkindly during that time). Dr. Ribo labored arduously for months to secure her return. After finally succeeding, Jose called on June 25, and asked if we would like to have Shannon. He felt that she was a fine bitch, but that she would require lots of love and attention before she could be shown. With a special commitment (and a very large measure of mothering) from Mari, Shannon began her show career six weeks later in mid-August of 1990. In her second show weekend out, she received her first major at a specialty show she completed her championship the following January, going Best of Breed over the specials. Her presence at this Invitational attests to the Sweet Sensation's continuing accomplishments. With becoming a mother to eight beautiful puppies this past February, it is expected that the "Sensation" will continue to be "Sweet" for a very long time. Thanks to the judges who recognized her many qualities, to her breeder and expert handler, Dr. Jose E. Ribo, and to the many Dane friends who supported us during a very special year. Each of you added to the fairy tale that's our Shannon.

spruce meadowsCH. Raintree's Latin Lover "Ricky"

In March 1996 at a dog show in Biloxi, Mississippi, David Hintson took Mari to show her a young male Whippet that needed a new home, Ricky. There was furious wagering at the show about whether David would be able to convince Mari to take Ricky home. Mari proved the Biloxi dog show odds makers wrong and Ricky came to Mobile to be the first male in our Whippet family. Ch. Raintree's Latin Lover "Ricky" completed his AKC championship in early 1998. As an eleven month old puppy, Ricky took two "back to back" majors during the Southern Regional weekend in Jackson, Mississippi (December 1997), and finished in January 1998 with three majors. Ricky has proven to be an exceptional Sire, with his structure, soundness and wonderful temperament being imprinted on his get.
